Robert Wells — Condensed Musical Bio
written and compiled from various sources – (i.e. not an ‘auto’ biography!!)
Robert Wells is most well known for his soulful and emotional singing style but also dabbles with multiple instruments including guitar, piano, drums, and bass. Currently, Robert writes, records and performs as a solo artist. He volunteers his time and talent with the worship team at Christ Fellowship / CityPlace and Palm Beach Gardens campuses in Palm Beach County, Florida (www.gochristfellowship.com).
Robert’s passion for music spans almost every genre and style with his biggest influences being Maxwell, Stevie Wonder, Chris Tomlin, Delirious, Brian McKnight, Take 6, Edwin McCain, and the great standard Jazz musicians of our time. Unmistakably though, Robert has his own style all together. Robert’s earlier original music pointed out worldly views, tackled stories about faith, love and loss. Today, without abandon, he clearly sings to praise the Lord. He currently writes music that weaves in and out of the Contemporary Christian and Alternative Soul genres.
In the past, from most recent to earlier, his band Forget Reason created songs with weaving harmonies, underlying intensity and expansive groove. Forget Reason was composed of 4 worship leaders from Cedar Ridge Community Church outside of Washington DC. The group, Robert Wells, Kevin Taylor (The Kevin Taylor Project), world-renowned drummer, Nuc Vega and out of this world bassist, Posido Vega (herein known as ‘the Vega brothers’) instantly found a synergy and formed Forget Reason. The band made a huge impact in the Washington DC area bringing a style that mixes technically challenging playing with radio friendly hooks.
Prior to Forget Reason, his band Soul Faction pioneered the very unique “Alternative Soul” style, infusing pop, rock, and r&b with dynamic, soulful vocals and painfully intricate, melodic rhythms. Interestingly, all songs on the “Knew You Then” album were written and performed by two artists (Robert Wells & Bobby Queen)
Taking a look further in history… As a Full Time student studying music at the University of South Carolina, Robert amazed people with his dynamic vocal range and soulful voice. In fact, he received musical scholarships throughout his tenure at the university. He was also awarded the coveted “Music Student of the Year” award.
While in college, turning his talents to R&B, he sang with the locally popular five man R&B group Legace. While singing with Legace, his singing was described as “silky, and mellow with deep vibes”, by the Sun News’ writer Johanna Wilson. Legace opened for acts like “Montel Jordan”, “Xscape”, and “II the Extreme”. They also received radio airplay when the singles “I’m Cryin” and “When the Rain Comes Down” were released.
Tackling jazz – he sang with All ‘Dat Jazz! and performed on stage with “The Four Freshman”, “The Warren Vache Trio”, and “Beachfront Property”. Also performing on several jazz projects, he quickly gained local exposure. Robert is one of the featured artists on the 1997 CD release of the All ‘Dat Jazz! Self-titled album.
